What used to be the 3rd most important food for the Aztecs – but was banished for religious reasons when the Spaniards arrived – is enjoying its revival as Power Food. It is said to have been the only nutrient source for the Aztecs when going to war as well as for the Indians when going on long journeys for trade.
So THERE is the little grain which officially is part of the mint family and HERE are we – The Tridudes – wanting to know: WHAT is the buzz all about???!!!
Chia Seeds are high in protein, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and fiber but even more in the widely celebrated Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids (no wonder the word Chia is derived from the Aztec word Chian – meaning oily). Chia can be used in many ways but one of the most common is to soak 2 table spoons in about 18 ounces of water for about 30 minutes. When you get back to the bottle there is not really water nor really seat left in the bottle but much more of a gelatinous substance. Exactly this substance is another amazing benefit of chia. No matter if you drink the seed soaked in water or eat them raw – this gelatinous form build in your stomach blocks the digestive enzymes from the seed and therefore allows for a slowly released sugar digestion. This way the seed turns into a very constant and long lasting energy source and at the same time you avoid any sugar pikes or lows in your nutrition.
The health benefits of Chia Seeds are tremendous and there aren’t any known side effects when eating chia. This is even acknowledged by the Food and Drug Administration of America.
We have taken the seed to its test – during long runs, bike rides, in daily use as well as when cross training (weight training, beach workouts….). Even though we wouldn’t want to rely on solely chia for an Ironman race – the benefits are obvious. No more sugar pikes or lows, after only 2 weeks it supported lean body mass and loss of body fat, it delivered long lasting energy for long workouts and digestion generally had been improved…. Allow roughly 2-5 days to start feeling the benefits.
….and if none of these benefits convince you there is still the fact that people will constantly ask you “What on earth are you drinking there” which can easily lead to finding new training buddies or MORE :-)….
…oh and hey – we are “athletes” and OF COURSE we don’t drink (right!!) but a spoon of dried chia seeds absorbs a lot of the alcohol in your stomach after a night out drinking and allows for a much faster “recovery”!!!!!
If you want to know more about Chia – where it comes from, nutritious facts or where to get it or if you have a food people don’t know a lot about but it totally convinces you – write us about it on firstname.lastname@example.org.
Until then – keep rocking and trinited we stand!!
